Turkey targets NBA basketball player called Erdogan ‘dictator’

Techtimes.Info – Turkish prosecutors have issued international detention letters against NBA basketball players who strengthen the New York Knicks, Enes Kanter.

As reported by a number of Turkish media, the prosecutors accused Kanter of having links with the armed groups which were said to be behind the failed 2016 coup.

However, Kanter, who once called President Recep Tayyip Erdogan a “dictator” dismissed allegations by Turkish prosecutors.

In his upload on Facebook, Kanter wrote: “The Turkish government cannot present a single piece of evidence of my mistake.”

“I have never even been ticketed in the US. I have always been a citizen who obeys the rules,” he added.

Before Turkish prosecutors released a detention letter, Kanter missed the New York Knicks’ team in a match in London on January 17 for fear of being killed by Erdogan supporters.

“It’s possible I was killed there,” he said at the time.

Kanter is known as a figure who blatantly opposes Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

The Turkish athlete refers to Erdogan as “our century Hitler”.

Kanter sided with Fethullah Gülen, a Muslim scholar accused of Erdogan masterminding a failed military coup in 2016.

In fact, Kanter regularly visits Gulen at his home in Pennsylvania, USA.

Kanter’s attitude is not without consequences.

In 2017, Kanter’s father, Mehmet, was arrested in Turkey and accused of being a member of a terrorist group. In the same year, the Turkish government revoked Kanter’s passport so he had to shorten his trip to Romania and return to the United States.

Kanter suspects that the incarceration of his parents is the way the Turkish government presses it.

Kanter is now a permanent resident of the United States and will get US citizenship in the next two years.
